Conflicting Plugins

Oct 15, 06:41 am

It’s bound to happen. Several plugin developers, all working with their own goals in mind, and no official plugin API to follow. That’s the current state of extensions for Safari, and sooner or later, two or more are going to conflict.

Recently, Safari performance had become really intolerable. Doing anything took so long that I took time out and used Camino for a while. The speed was a huge relief, and for a while I left Safari in the background. One thing drew me back though – SafariStand and those lovely Omniweb style tabs – my favourite tab system.

The action I took was this – I removed all my plugins, and left myself with the 2 that I felt I needed the most. I decided on Saft and SafariStand, and now it all feels back to normal. My theory is that WebDevAdditions wasn’t playing nicely, which is a shame, but its not as high a priority as the other two.

Have you had to do this? Let me know what you’re left with…

the same here. pithhelmet was the culprit, in my case. I had so many crashes!!
now, with saft and safari stand everything is almost back to normal. few rss-related crashes.

Same here, I dumped them all in favor of SafariStand now—though I’ve been going back to camino lately in my love/hate relationship with browsers.

BTW: Has anyone had problems with PithHelmet ditching cookies, even when it and Safari are set to keep them all?

I’ve also deleted all plugins except Saft and Safarisource.

it’s impossible to have more the 10 pages open…and the worst thing is that i can’t use the new SafariStand tabs – it’s just killing safari…anyway i would like to keep SS only but the one thing that i really need from SAFT is “Restore at start” so when safari crash i will get my windows back…maybe somebody knows about a different way to have that feature?

WebDevAdditions is bug-riddled, to say the least. I use PithHelmet and Saft and they don’t crash most of the time.

ZX – Saft is the only way for that I’m afraid. SS will let you save the tab setup as a workspace in the bookmark shelf, but its very manual. You’d have to save it, restart, and then choose the workspace, and open up tabs.

So that’s what it was! I was having a terrible time trying to use Safari, PithHelmet, and SafariStand. I removed PithHelmet and Safari has been running great ever since. Now I get tabs like OmniWeb and I don’t have the constant crashing. Now I wish that site preferences like OW so I can adjust the font size for sites with tiny fonts.

Phill,

You can enjoy limited site preferences with SafariStand; open Stand’s preferences and go to “site alteration.” There you can add URLs (manually or by visiting the site and clicking the “add” button) and set different font sizes. It also allows for customized style sheets, though these tend to conflict with Safari’s style sheet.

In terms of conflicts, I noticed that PithHelmet made some of Stand’s more desired features inoperable. So I disabled it. Didn’t cause crashes for me, however.

Got a question . . . A while ago I had a crash in Safari, and had to reset my plugins. Now, all of sudden, I don’t have “Open link in new tab” in the content menu. Where did it go? I have Stand, Saft, and WebDev Additions and checked the Safari pref, but it’s nowhere to be seen. I really miss it and I don’t want to have to be pressing Cmd key when I could just do it with right-click from my mouse.

Never mind . . . I see it now.

Thanks for the info Steven, but it doesn’t work for me. I’ve added sites and changed the font size, but it doesn’t not seem to change. I’ll keep trying it though.

Saft provides me with everything I need.

btw: I can’t get Safaristand and Saft to work together. They work just fine by themselves – but whenever I try to use them together, Safari just crashes on launch :(

Nevermind, figured it out. I just ditched SIMBL and moved Safaristand directly into Inputmanagers instead.

Sorry for the triplepost ;)

I have only Safari Stand installed and nothing else, still Safari crashes when SS is installed. Here is how I crash it:

Go to a web site like eBay. Start opening tabs using the command-click. By the 5th tab, crash. This also happens with different forums. I open a few tabs and it crashes.

Is it just me, or does this happen to others?

The new Safari may have fixed my crashes with Safari Stand. Last night I updated my system and I have not had a crash since. I installed Safari Stand and also the NIB for removing the top tabs. I went to eBay just now and fired off a bunch of tabs all very quickly and Safari did not crash.

Whoo Hoo!

So Safari Stand version don’t have to follow Safari versions like Saft does?
